In my first experience of auditing an organization’s social media presence, I found it less difficult than expected. I got the chance to audit a non-profit company that has only 4 paid employees, and has little experience running social media. In my personal opinion, I thought they were doing an okay job, but could significantly improve their social media with the help of others. One main goal for the organization was to raise more awareness about the projects they were doing, and bring in more volunteers for those projects.
A couple suggestions that we gave the organization were to post more often on sites such as Twitter and Instagram, create a scheduled time to post every day or week, and plan posts in advance in case of lack of time to brainstorm posts. I believe that if the organization can increase how often they post, that they can improve their following and bring more attention to their organization. Through my group members, I was able to learn more about apps that can help to better run and organize different social media apps. I enjoyed getting to work with my group because they were more experienced with social media than I am and it gave me the opportunity to learn as well. At the end of the experience, we invited the organization to return to an upcoming class for more information on how to effectively run their social media.
Overall, I found the experience to be beneficial for both the organization and the students. Students were given the opportunity to work with a real organization and give their input and ideas on how to better their social media presence, while the organization was given the opportunity to receive free tips and tricks. Personally, I’ve never audited an organization’s social media, and I found it very exciting to be able to give them feedback and suggestions. The particular organization that I got to help is in the process of looking for an intern to run their social media, and I am strongly considering applying for the internship for the summer. I think that it could be a very good opportunity to gain experience working with social media, so I am looking forward to applying for that.
